Did you know that you’re likely eating local potatoes when you rip open a bag of Lay’s? If you caught the Super Bowl last night, you might have seen the ad for Lay’s potato chips showing a young girl carefully tending to a potato plant. The commercial ends with a collage of photos of potato farmers from St. Johns County, including multiple generations of the family belonging to 5-year-old DeLee Parker. Her dad Jeffrey says, “Our family is happy and honored” to be in the commercial. They’ve been farming in St. Johns County since 1937, and Lay’s has been turning their potatoes into chips since 1964. Hastings farmers Steve Singleton, his wife April and their sons are also featured in the ad, along with Wesley Smith, another Hastings potato grower.
