This has been a very good week for the movie business, with the previous U.S. box office record for the Thanksgiving weekend blown out of the water.

In Jacksonville, though, moviegoers might be forgiven for questioning the future of going out to the movies. The independently run Sun-Ray Cinema and San Marco Theater and the Regal Beach Boulevard theater all closed in the past few years. But with large theaters also popping up in the fast-growing suburbs, there are now 11 local theater options for the cinematically inclined in the Jax metro area.

Our Number of the Week is the number of First Coast residents per movie theater in our region: 146,690.

With 11 theaters in Duval, Clay, St. Johns, Nassau and Baker counties, that’s one theater for every 146,690 people (which felt like the number of people who were at a single showing during Moana 2‘s opening weekend).
