Conservation tax approved by wide margin in Clay County

Clay County voters overwhelming supported a tax increase Tuesday to protect water quality, wildlife and more.

The Clay County Land Conservation Referendum passed overwhelmingly, 73% to 27%.

The referendum will raise property taxes by 2 mills to pay for land conservation efforts in the county.

It will cost the average homeowner $33 a year over 20 years. The money will go toward bonds to pay for land conservation.

In Clay County races:

  • Sheriff Michelle Cook was reelected over former Sheriff Darryl Daniels with almost 80% of the vote. She will serve her second four-year term.

  • Robert Alvero defeated James Hughes 54% to 46% in the race for School Board District 2.
