Committee gets organized to study need for new jail

An organizational meeting a special Jacksonville City Council committee created five subcommittees to study short-term needs for the jail and police headquarters Downtown.

Whether to keep the jail and police headquarters or move them from the Downtown Northbank to open the property for redevelopment has been a topic for years.

Council President Ron Salem said a new jail would not be built this year. The committee’s task is to collect information to allow for a request for proposals to be crafted next year.
