A bridge repair project has shut down a quarter-mile stretch of Julington Creek Road for at least the next month.

That means commuters, parents and school buses need to find a detour around the site, which includes the use of Marbon and Hood Landing roads on either side of the closure to get north to other routes.

The $800,000 project, which started in mid-May, includes rebuilding the approach slabs to the short bridge over Oldfield Creek, along with roadway and bridge repairs on Julington Creek Road between Shady Creek Driver and Hillwood Road. The road closure starts about a mile east of San Jose Boulevard. The two-lane route averaged 5,600 vehicles a day, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

“As it stands now, both approach slabs have been reestablished and their proper elevations,” a city spokesperson told WJCT News 89.9. Now, the restoration portion of the project is underway. That includes milling and resurfacing, new guardrails, pressure washing the bridge railing and painting, new gravity walls along parts of the bridge system, curb and gutter work and new sidewalks.

The contractor has until Sept. 26 to achieve what the city calls “substantial completion for the project.”
