A police shooting that snarled southbound I-95 traffic late Monday remains under investigation as police try to piece together why a Jacksonville police lieutenant fired his gun at a truck after their vehicles came together.

The shooting and the investigation that followed caused traffic to back up for hours on the southbound interstate as police blocked lanes and ramps onto the highway off Atlantic Boulevard in San Marco.

The incident started about 4 p.m. when a 70-year-old truck driver headed to Cape Coral came into contact with off-duty Sheriff’s Office Lt. Marc Crawford on I-95 South, Chief Alan Parker said.

“It appears they may have contacted each other more than once,” Parker told reporters after the shooting. “During that incident, the lieutenant did exit his vehicle, and sometime during that incident, he engaged the semi truck; he fired four rounds into the truck. The driver was not hurt; wasn’t injured or anything. The round went into kind of the front side where the engine is.”

This was the lieutenant’s fourth officer shooting in his 21-year career, and the second so far this year for the Sheriff’s Office. The truck driver has not been charged with anything, Parker said.

Parker said he did not know what led up to the incident, or what kind of contact occurred between the truck and lieutenant’s vehicle on the busy interstate. It appears that Crawford was the only person who fired, Parker said. Police have no bodycam video since lieutenants do not wear the device, while the truck driver was working with police to download video from his vehicle’s camera, Parker says.

Police are trying to track down witnesses to the shooting as part of the Sheriff’s Office ongoing investigation after receiving “multiple 911 calls” about what was seen on the busy interstate just south of downtown.

The lieutenant was treated for a shoulder injury suffered in the incident, Parker said.
