After a task force last year called for putting a state Black history museum in St. Johns County, Sen. Tom Leek, R-Ormond Beach, filed a bill (SB 466) on Monday that would move forward with the idea.
The bill would create a Florida Museum of Black History board of directors, which would work with the Foundation for the Museum of Black History Inc., a nonprofit organization, to help create the museum.
The St. Johns County Commission also would provide staff for the board until planning, design and engineering are finished, according to the bill.
The museum would be on the former site of Florida Memorial University, west of St. Augustine.
Leek, whose district includes St. Johns County, filed the bill for consideration during the legislative session that will start March 4.
