A man armed with a butter knife was shot and killed Monday night after officers responded to a carjacking on Eaverson Street, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Officers were called out to Northwest Jacksonville at 8:40 p.m. after a woman reported that her car had been stolen, police said.

As police interviewed the victim and family, a man who had nothing to do with the carjacking began harassing them. The man — later identified as Djuan Jackson, 54 — flashed a knife toward the family and made stabbing motions, police said.

Two officers saw him do this and shot him multiple times. He died at the scene.

Sheriff T.K. Waters said the incident unfolded quickly.

“You can hear someone yelling out, ‘He’s got a knife,'” Waters said. “Officers saw the stabbing motion; they thought the victim had been stabbed several times because of the motions.

“It is unfortunate that it worked out the way that it did. You don’t want this to happen under any circumstance, but when officers see that kind of thing happening, they have to take action at some point.”

Investigators learned that the man had been holding a butter knife after they gave him first aid, police said.

Two officers were involved. They were identified as two-year Officer J. Montgomery and five-year veteran J.C. Rose.

It was the first officer shooting for both, police said. It was the sixth shooting involving police officers this year.
