A multimillion-dollar project to add a traffic roundabout at Edgewood Avenue South and Plymouth Street is nearing completion.
When it is done at the southeastern end of the Edgewood Avenue business district, state transportation officials said it should improve traffic flow for drivers entering or exiting Roosevelt Boulevard.
The new traffic circle was initiated at the city’s request, since Edgewood Avenue South is not a state road. The roundabout should be done around mid-May, said Hampton Ray, spokesman for the Florida Department of Transportation.
“Crews are currently working overnight to stripe and pave portions of the roadway. Daytime work at the location has been limited to minimize the impact to local businesses,” Ray said.
One goal of the project is to improve mobility through the corridor with bike lanes, shared-use lane markings, mid-block crossings, sidewalk improvements and updated lighting at the U.S. 17 underpass, Ray said.
The $7.66 million project started in March on Edgewood Avenue South from Roosevelt Boulevard to Cassat Avenue and included rehabilitation of the railroad crossing.
Resurfacing is still underway on Edgewood Avenue from Roosevelt to Lenox Avenue, with work being done on Lenox Avenue from Edgewood to Cassat Avenue.
More work along the corridor will be necessary, including intermittent closures at Roosevelt Boulevard and Edgewood Avenue for bridge improvements and other work related to signals and electrical components.
“Crews will still be performing activities along the project corridor and Lenox Avenue,” he said. “The entire project is expected to be completed this summer.”
